    Paul Alfred Wilhelm was born in Greiz in 1886 as the son of a cloth manufacturer. From 1904 to 1905 studied Wilhelm at the Royal School of Applied Arts in Dresden and from 1905 to 1912 at the Dresden Art Academy at Richard Müller, Oskar Zwintscher and Osmar Schindler. In 1908 he became a master student at Gotthardt Kuehl.

    He had his first exhibition in 1910 at the Emil Richter Art Salon in Dresden. From 1911 he lived in the tower house of the Grundhof in Niederlößnitz , together with Karl Kröner and Wilhelm Claus. In 1920 he moved within Niederlößnitz to Gradsteg 46 in the Villa Elfriede, which (probably until then) had belonged to the writer and politician Max König.
