    A portrait, genre, landscape and religous painter and art teacher, Paul Poincy was considered "to be one of the best portrait painters" in New Orleans. Although most of his subjects were prominent persons, it was written that "he preferred creating children's portraits and works with religious themes."(Mahe)

    Paul Poincy, of French descent, was based in that city from 1859 to 1909. Studio locations included Canal Street, Carondelet and North Rampart Street. Before re-setting in New Orleans, his birth place, he was in Paris from 1852 to 1858, where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and Academy Julian and with teachers Marc-Gabriel-Charles Gleyre, Léon Cogniet, and M.
