    Peter Coker, who has died aged 78, was one of the leading realist painters of his generation and an important figure in the post-war movement that the critics christened, not altogether accurately, the Kitchen Sink School.

    While John Bratby, Jack Smith and Ed Middleditch are among the more familiar names of the movement, Coker's first one-man show at Zwemmers in 1956 - featuring large, obsessive and fiercely-painted scenes of animal carcasses in a butcher's shop - created no less of a critical stir at the time.
