He was exposed to art at an early age by his father, painter Mel Fillerup, who encouraged his son's talent. His numerous awards include three gold medals and one Best of Show from American Indian and Cowboy Artist Shows, and two first place awards at the Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale, in which he and his father Melvin M.
