Freudenthal studied art, art history, archeology, and ethnography at Stockholm University and worked as an archaeologist in northern Sudan in 1962. Freudenthal's art is mainly characterized by geometric compositions with symbolic meanings and sharp optical effects.

In the 1960s, Peter Freudenthal met his mentor Olle Baertling, whose concrete art and open forms inspired him to create a whole new kind of geometric paintings with squares and rectangles with three-dimensional perspectives.
