    Peter Schuyff biographical photo
Peter Schuyff was born in 1958 in Baam, Holland. In 1967 he moved with his family to Vancouver, Canada, where his father was a professor of economics at Simon Fraser University. His mother is an artist. Growing up amid the radicalism of the late '60s and early '70s, Schuyff was intrigued by his father's "hippie" colleagues. He also became infatuated with a number of art-world personalities, video artists, Andy Warhol, the New York School painters, especially Willem de Kooning. "I was very impressed that they could get away with doing such naughty work," he says. "It seemed so rich, so seductive, so profound."

Schuyff decided after high school to enroll at the Vancouver School of Art. He studied there for a year and a half but found his fellow students, many of whom were performance artists, far more stimulating than his classes. After leaving school, he painted for a while in Vancouver and became friends with a Canadian painter, Michael Morris, who "taught me everything I know." Inevitably, Schuyff was drawn to New York.

  • Biography from Waddington's

Peter Schuyff is a leading international artist whose work is identified with the “Neo-Geo” movement in New York. The Neo-Geo movement is one that is less contained to a generation or zeitgeist, but rather symbolizes an engagement with modernist form and its various offshoots (minimalism, pop art, op art, etc.). This movement hopes to keep alive the tradition of geometric abstraction that began in the 1950’s and 1960’s. This contemporary painter, sculptor and musician is renown for painting abstract works on top of found paintings. Schuyff was born in the Netherlands in 1958, educated in Canada at the Vancouver School of Art (what is now the Emily Carr University of Art and Design), and was based in New York and now Amsterdam. He is an important Dutch/Canadian/American artist associated with Askley Bickerton, Peter Halley, and artist Jeff Koons. He has sat for Andy Warhol and been represented by leading gallerists like Mary Boone, Gagosian, Leo Castelli and in the Douglas Udell. Schuyff has been exhibited and collected internationally, including the art collection of Herbert and Dorothy Vogel and private collections in Canada and most recently in 2015, in the 48th Annual Spring Show, at the Douglas Udell Gallery, Calgary. Peter Schuyff now lives and works in the Netherlands.
