    Phelan Gibb was born in Northumberland, England in 1870, son of the artist Thomas Henry Gibb. He studied in Newcastle, Edinburgh, Paris, Antwerp and Munich.

    Gibb spent twenty-five years in Paris at the turn of the twentieth century painting and there befriended a number of historically important artists, such as Henri Matisse, André Derain and others connected with the Fauve School in France.

    Gibb was particularly proud of his mother's Irish parentage, hence his use of the name "Phelan". He exhibited in Dublin twice, once in 1913 when his one man show, organised by Count Casimir Markievicz and Oliver St. John Gogarty, was closed by the police and his pictures were confiscated (and only returned to him in 19...
