    Pier Celestino Gilardi was an Italian artist who was a pupil of Andrea Gastaldi at the Albertina Academy in Turin. He succeeded Gastaldi in the chair of painting in 1873. Gilardi participated in many exhibitions in Italy and abroad, mainly painting genre scenes with internal figures, but also landscapes and glimpses of the country. He demonstrated inventive and descriptive skills with pleasant analytical qualities in the reconstruction of the environments and a lot of humor and psychological depth at the same time in describing his subjects. He began his career with historical subjects, very fashionable at the time, to then orient his taste towards so-called gender themes.
