    Pierre Jean Van der Ouderaa was born in Antwerp in 1841, where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts and became a student of Jacob Jacobs and Joseph van Lerius. He continued his academic career as a professor at the Higher Institute of Arts and as a member of the academic staff in 1890.

    During his career he made many study trips to Italy. He visited Rome where he admired the works of Raphael and Venice in 1866, where he was inspired. He then went to the Holy Land in 1893, a key step for the realization of biblical subjects.
