Szanto Piroska
  • Biography

Szántó Piroska was a Hungarian painter who studied in private schools after being expelled from the Academy of Fine Arts. She first arrived in Szentendre in 1937 at the invitation of Bálint Endre and later became associated with the circle of artists around Lajos Vajda. In her early years, Szántó’s work was strongly influenced by Vajda’s approach to form and symbolism.

Over time she developed a distinctive visual language, frequently depicting plants and animals with human characteristics. Working in series was characteristic of her practice, and she often rendered her figures with a sculptural sense of volume. Alongside the spiritual dimension present in her imagery, her paintings are marked by a pronounced decorative quality.
