About Qingji Wei

    Wei Qingji applies his training in traditional Chinese ink brush painting to contemporary iconography, including motifs from graffiti, Pop Art, and erotica. His works explore the dichotomy between contemporary China's appetite for Western materialism and its commitment to its own rich cultural history.

    Unlike other members of the group of experimental ink brush painters that emerged in China in the 1990s, Wei does not concentrate exclusively on abstract forms. He incorporates figurative elements, often readily recognizable characters including Mickey Mouse, Spiderman, and household pets. He also expands the medium to include pencil and collage elements....
