R. Fred Mason was born in Alabama and grew up exploring the Tennessee River, searching for Indian artifacts. His great appreciation for the woods and rivers followed him into adulthood to the bayous of Louisiana where his love for hunting and fishing led him into painting his experiences. Beginning with waterfowl and deer, he moved on to painting the Southern landscape of cotton fields, mules and
wagons, and creeks and swamps.

After moving to Texas, Mason was drawn to the working cowboy and the Native Americans of the Old West. He works from his photos taken at Texas,
Wyoming, and Oklahoma ranches to depict the scenes in his paintings, using a pallet of monochromatic shades accented with dashes of color.
