About Ralph Hillyer Avery

  • Biography

    Watercolor artist, Ralph Avery graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1928 and was a faculty member of the department of Applied Art for 25 years. He often painted scenes from the local area-gray, foggy views of the downtown skyline, portraits of elegant old city homes, and abstractions of natural areas from the surrounding landscape.

    His most remembered work is a wonderful series of drawings depicting "The statue of Mercury;" (messenger of the god's and the highlight of Rochester New York's skyline) as seen through the artist's eyes. In 1881, this statue was commissioned by William Kimball of Kimball Tobacco Factory.
