Born in Oakland, CA in 1906, Raymond Wilson spent his childhood in Baltimore, MD but returned to Oakland in 1921. He worked as a longshoreman in San Francisco during the early years of the Depression.
Opting for an art career, he studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts and privately with Maurice Logan. A swimming accident in the early 1930s left him crippled and, while recuperating, he began painting watercolors. His works received good reviews from local critics.
In 1940, at the peak of his career, he suffered a mental collapse and was confined to mental institutions in Stockton and Norwalk where he remained until his death on Sept. 6, 1972.
