    Rene De Saint Marceaux was a French sculptor who studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris with François Jouffroy in 1863. He mainly created portrait busts and images of animals and exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1868. He spent time in Florence instead of competing for the Prix de Rome in 1868 and was in Italy for the second time in 1873-74. His marble sculpture "The Spirit Guarding the Secret of the Tomb" shows the clear influence of Michelangelo. Among his works were several statues created for Baron Rothschild for his Château de Ferrières and a tomb in Montmartre Cemetery in Paris for Alexander Dumas' son.
