    Renato Birolli was an Italian painter born in Verona in 1906. Birolli was an anti-fascist activist engaged in the Resistance during the war. Renato Birolli moved to Milan in 1923 where he formed an avant-garde group with other artists such as Renato Guttuso, Giacomo Manzù and Aligi Sassu and in 1937 he joined the artistic movement called Corrente. After the Second World War, Birolli moved to Paris and under the influence of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, his painting style quickly went from post-cubism to a certain form of lyricism.
