    Reza Mafi was born in 1943 in Mashad the capital of Khorassan province in northeast of Iran. He studied Persian calligraphy under the apprenticeship of calligrapher E'tezadi. Reza Mafi himself came from the family of Calligraphers.

    The art of Calligraphy or Nasta' liq, literally meaning hanging scripts in Iran, is an old art form of calligraphy that began in 8th and 9th century and was fully developed in 14th century.

    Reza Mafi moved to Tehran in 1958, and from 1964 he attended a four-year program in Persian Calligraphy under Seid Hossein Mirkhani.
