    Information provided by Robert and Terese Cook, who found a short biography, signed by the artist, and taped to the back of a painting:
    A Fauvist painter of circus scenes and landscapes, his most important influences were Matisse, de Vlaminck, Derain, and Raoul Dufy. His early paintings, exhibited at the Parkhaus in Bochum, Germany, in 1920/21, already showed the influence of the Fauve in their colors.

    He studied with Professors Herwig and Treskow in Germany, and later with Larry Rivers in New York City. Before 1940, Spiegel traveled in Europe, Germany, France, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, and Holland, and after 1940, in the U.S., Canada,
    Montevideo/Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentina.
