    Clunie, Robert (1895-1984) (Santa Paula / Bishop)

    Robert Clunie grew up in Scotland, immigrated to America and set up in Michigan. He took his first train trip to Pasadena in January 1918, ultimately got a job painting signs on creamery trucks and explored LA. Deafness in one ear exempted him from military service in WWI. He applied for citizenship and decided to remain in California, but he had to return to Michigan, and that fateful train trip took him through the Sierra Nevada where he was thrilled artistically with the mountains.
