Robert Gavin was a Scottish artist who flourished in the 19th century. He produced a diverse range of artworks, including landscapes, portraits, and narrative subjects inspired by literary themes. Gavin exhibited regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy in the mid-19th century but felt he had not yet found a subject that truly captured his interest. It wasn't until his 1868 voyage to New Orleans that Gavin's passion for painting was reignited.
