Born in Ashburton, New Zealand in 1937, Robert McDowell studied at Canterbury and Otago Universities. A graphic designer and painter, he has painted professionally snce 1972. From 1976, he has won numerous awards including the Kelliher Award, Ashbuton Trust Award, Montana Art Award, Michael Matter AWard and the David Watt Ford Award.
