    Rolf Cavael initially trained as a photographer and worked in the film business. From 1924 to 1926 he studied typography at the Städel School in Frankfurt. He then worked as a teacher of applied graphics at the Frankfurt trade school. An encounter with Kandinsky in 1930 influenced Cavael artistic work.

    In 1933 there was a first major exhibition of his work, which was closed by the Nazis. Cavael was banned from painting. After the war he resumed his artistic work again and founded, together with fellow artists, the group ZEN 49 in 1949.
