About Roy Ropp

  • Biography

    Roy M. Ropp was born in Butler County, Kansas on June 19, 1888. Ropp was a carpenter in Guthrie, Oklahoma before moving to southern California.

    He farmed for awhile in Palo Verde and settled in Laguna Beach in 1921. There he became a successful builder, insurance and real estate agent. After taking up painting in 1931, he painted coastals, seascapes, and desert landscapes. He was the creator and director of the Pageant of the Masters, Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts.

    In 1961 he retired to the Yucca Valley, north of Palm Springs, where he taught art classes until his death on May 8, 1974.
