Pu Hsin-Yu was born in the royal imperial Manchu family in Beijing in 1896 and he was popularly known as the "Three Masters Accross the Straits" with Chang Dai-Chien and Huang Jun-Bi. Although Pu Hsin-Yu was both educated at Peking University and Humboldt University Berlin, Germany, he abandoned the pressing Western culture and constantly advocated traditional Chinese philosophy. As a descendant of the Qing dynasty royalty, he delved into the arts since childhood and produced otherworldly forms of verse and calligraphy. He received a privately tutored classical education that included training in Chinese painting and calligraphy and he excelled at both. He learned by copying ancient Chinese masterpieces in the royal collection and his paintings are based on the literati landscape tradition of the late Ming but he also studied the work of the Song landscape masters.
Considered as the most accomplished master for the comprehensive Chinese art, his works were highly honored by the Chinese people. He was also famed for his natural scenes description, such as the pines, the brush and ink naturally emit a strong sense of vigor throughout, making this an outstanding example of his paintings. Pu Ru was born in Beijing, China in 1896. Pu Hsinyu is a well-known painter and calligrapher. He was born in the royal Imperial Manchu family as the grandson of the Emperor, near the end of the Qing Dynasty. He learned calligraphy at an early age by imitating works that he finds in the family's art collections. In his teenage years, he traveled abroad to pursuit further education in Germany, where he graduated with dual doctorate degrees in Biology and Astronomy.
He then returned to China and lived a secluded life in the Je Tai Monastery at His-Shan (West Mountain) of Beijing in 1925. Thus, was given the title “Hermit of West Mountain”.
He was one of the founders for the “Song-Feng Painters Group” in 1925. He hosted his first major art exhibition with his wife in 1930 and was famous ever since.
In 1949, he immigrated to Taiwan where he taught at the National Taiwan Normal University and opened the “Hanyu Tong studio”. In 1954, he published the “Hanyu Tong Aesthetic Theory” and received first place from the Education Department of R.O.C.
Pu Ru was skilled in calligraphy, literature, poetry and various subjects. His fame was on a par with that of Zhang Da-Chian, they were often referred as “Zheng in the South and Pu in the North” for their recognized accomplishments.Biography from China Guardian Auctions Beijing
Pu Ru, courtesy name Xinshe, nicknamed Xishan Yishi, was a native of Wanping, Hebei. Qing imperial family, grandson of Prince Gong, studied in Germany in 1907. He is proficient in calligraphy and painting, works on landscapes, figures, and beasts, and has a wealth of family collections. Went to Taiwan in 1949.
