    The painter Rudolf Hellgrewe was born in 1860 in West Prussian Hammerstein. He studied at the Berlin Academy of Art under Eugen Bracht and Christian Wilberg. After his journey to East Africa from 1885-86 he created numerous images with oriental subjects, moreover, he was illustrating travel literature. He was also co-founder of the German Colonial Museum.
