  • Biography

Born in Vienna, Austrai in 1812, Rudolf von Alt was a landscape and architectural painter. Studying first under his father, the lithographer Jakob Alt, Rudolf entered the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in 1826. Walking through Salzburg, Bavaria, Tyrol and Northern Italy with his father led to an 1833 commission from Archduke Ferdinand for them to paint a series of landscapes and historical town views completed in 1844.

Rudolf von Alt's official commissions earned him a variety of titles and awards. His success allowed him to accept or decline work as he chose. He created a series of landscapes, town views and building interiors for Vienna Academy, but declined a professorship to the Vienna Academy in 1867.
