    A Scottish landscape painter, Samuel Bough was born in Carlisle, the son of a shoemaker. He was self taught and worked as a painter of theatre scenery in Manchester and Glasgow. He was encouraged by Daniel MacNee to take up painting. Sam Bough is best remembered for his Scottish and north of England landscape scenes. His early style is minute and detailed; after 1860 his handling became broader and more confident.

    In Glasgow between 1848-1855, Sam Bough often worked with the landscape artist, Alexander Fraser, in the Cadzow Forest. His painting, In Cadzow Forest (1857), influenced by McCulloch, is a 'magnificent' portrait of two ancient trees. He later fell out with McCulloch, (their dogs apparently taking...
