    Samuel Joseph Brown (b.1907, Wilmington, North Carolina; d. 1994, Philadephia, Pennsylvania)

    A painter, printmaker, sculptor and teacher, he studied at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art and at the Teachers' College of the University of Pennsylvania. He was employed by the Federal Art Project from 1933 to 1935, during which time he participated in many exhibitions. His painting So Tired (later renamed The Scrub Woman, now extant) was shown at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in 1934 as part of a national exhibition featuring art from the Federal Arts Project.
