    International architect and painter Serge Chermayeff was the Director of the Institute of Design in Chicago from 1946-1951. He was born in Russia, educated in England and came to the United States in 1900, having already earned a prestigious reputation because of special architectural commissions received in England.

    He received architectural commissions for large residences in California and also taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Harvard and Yale universities.

    His two-dimensional work was abstraction.
