    Sheokjuk Oqutaq (1920 – 1982)

    An important Canadian Inuit sculptor and carver, Sheokjuk Oqutaq (disc number* E7-919) was born in Shartoweetok camp, near Cape Dorset* (now: Kinngait), Nunavut on Baffin Island and appears to have lived in Cape Dorset or its environs for most of his life. His works have been featured in exhibitions at major venues such as the British Museum, London, England; the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; and The Hermitage, St. Petersburg, Russia. His sculptures and carvings are in the collections of many museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York); the National Museum of the American Indian – Smithsonian Institution (Washington D.C.) and the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa).
