    Sir Charles Eastlake, polymath and embodiment of the early Victorian art establishment, enjoyed a dazzling series of appointments. In 1850 he was elected President of the Royal Academy and knighted. In 1851, he served as a commissioner for the Great Exhibition, and in 1855 he was made Director of the National Gallery, holding the post in tandem with that of PRA until his death ten years later. To his initiative are due many of the greatest and best-loved masterpieces in the collection.

    The present picture was exhibited at the RA in 1834. The sitter was the daughter of Lady Charlotte Bury and her second husband, the Rev. John Bury, rector of Lichfield in Hampshire. Lady Charlotte was the youngest child of...
