Soly Cissé, who was born in 1969 in Senegal, lives and works in the city of Dakar and is one of Senegal's most celebrated artists. He has exhibited widely in Europe, the Americas and within Africa. Despite his father, who was a medical doctor, fiercely objecting, Cissé attended the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts de Dakar, graduated top of his class and went on to show regularly in Dakar throughout the 1990's. As a young boy, Cissé drew on the X-rays that his medical doctor father brought back from work. Today he is still fascinated by light, transparency, and in the essence of colour.
