    Soshana Afroyim (born 1927)

    The artist Soshana Afroyim was born in 1927 in Vienna, with the civil name Susanne Schüller. After the annexation of Austria to Nazi Germany, the Jewish Schüller family escaped via Switzerland to Paris and finally to London, where the family remained for a period of two years. In 1941, they moved on to New York, where Soshana enrolled in the Washington Irving High School. In a painting class she met her later husband Beys Afroyim. Due to his membership in the Communist Party the couple left the US in 1948 and lived in Cuba for nine months, where Soshana held her first exhibition.
