Stefano Pozzo
  • Biography

Stefano Pozzi was an Italian Baroque painter who flourished in the 18th century. He was born into a dynasty of Roman artists and was commissioned to create an altarpiece for the high altar of the chapel of Saint-Joachim in the church of Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola in Rome. Pozzi was a pupil of Andrea Proccacini and Agostino Masucci, and he demonstrated his mastery of color and composition in his artwork. He was known for his use of a rich palette of soft and precious nuances, and his artwork often featured a vertical spiral composition. Pozzi's altarpiece for the Saint-Joachim chapel depicted a young girl of an age to understand, rather than a child, which was an unusual iconography for this episode in the life of Mary
