Born in Inazawa, Japan in 1901, Takanori Oguiss studied at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts before moving to Paris at age 26, where as a pupil of the painter Foujita, he became an important part of the Parisian avant-garde. He settled in one of the studios of the Cité Montmartre-aux-artistes, not far from his comrade Inokuma. He also socialized with the painters of La Ruche, a group of young artists from all over Europe at the center of artistic life in Paris at the time.
