About Tapio Wirkkala

    Tapio Wirkkala was a Finnish artist and designer who rose to fame in the early 1950's for his work in industrial design. He graduated from the School of Art and Design in 1936 and gained a reputation for his work in glass and silver.

    Wirkkala drew inspiration from the landscapes of Lapland, where he lived part of the year. His designs often featured forms from nature such as snow, melting ice, boats, and leaves. He worked for several companies simultaneously and designed both everyday objects and unique works of art.

    Wirkkala passed away in 1985.
