    The Hague artist Theo van Hoytema became well-known for his color-lithographed illustrations for Hans Christian Andersen's fairy-tale THE UGLY DUCKLING (1893). This picture book was unique in Holland because of its blending text with pictures, produced from stone plates and published by C. M. van Gogh (Vincent's family).

    Van Hoytema was greatly inspired by flora and fauna and converted influences from Art Nouveau and Japanese art after his own fashion. He did not belong to any school and stayed loyal to nature's example in his work. Sketches and studies of the countryside, of the poultry around his house and of the animals in the Amsterdam Zoo are often the basis of his work.
