    New York City street scenes, especially at dusk when the city seems quiet and traffic is framed by tall, imposing skyscrapers is the favorite subject matter of Thomas Connolly. Although his paintings seem totally realistic in that buildings and skylines are identifiable, he adds artistic innovation through his handling of light and dark and atmosphere. There is a pervasive sense of quiet and calm, especially in his many paintings that convey rain, fog or encroaching dusk. However, his scenes usually have evidence of human activity---people on the streets and running and parked cars. Viewers who have been in the City know that these elements create noise, not quiet, but Connolly is able to keep tight control...
