    Þorvaldur Skúlason was a pioneer of abstract art in Iceland. He received his education in Reykjavík and Oslo before moving to Paris and Copenhagen in the 1930s. Skúlason was initially influenced by French Cubism and his early works contain stylistic elements from Picasso and Matisse. After returning to Iceland in 1940, he focused on themes and expressions associated with Icelandic natural culture. Skúlason reconciled different perspectives of the international avant-garde with strongly Icelandic characteristics in his artwork.
