Abstract painter Thomas Holland was born in 1936 and settled in the Bay Area of California. His works are not associated with any particular movement or artistic group, but space, color, and form are common themes surrounding his often geometric works. His materials and mediums are varied -- fiberglass, aluminum, epoxy paint, paper, and marble transforming and constructing these materials into multi-dimensional objects such as free standing structures or wall reliefs.

His wall reliefs have forms such as triangles, arcs, loops or rectangles superimposed on the basic background sheet and these shapes project out creating a third dimension. The articulation of form and color cause an interplay between the patterns and colors and the dimensional abstraction makes the wall pieces both painterly and sculptural.

Holland studied at Willamette University from 1954 to 1956 and from 1957 attended Berkeley University and the University of Santa Barbara. He has been a teacher at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1961 to 1968 and 1972 to 1980 and also taught at Berkeley and the University of California at Los Angeles.

Awards include a Fulbright Grant to Santiago, Chile from 1959 to 1960, and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts from 1975 to 1976.
