    Professor Tomas T. Bernardo had painted for over fifty years. He had taken some art lessons from his uncle, Teodoro Buenaventura, and later developed his own style of painting. For many years he worked in the National Museum doing botanical drawings under the famous botanist, Dr. Eduardo Quisumbing , who was at that time the Director of the Museum.

    Bernardo’s paintings of orchids in their natural habitat were considered one of the best paintings of that class. In 1963 he won a scholarship to Italy on restoration. This study was greatly needed by the Museum for the repair of its many treasures, which at that time, were in poor condition.
