    Valery Nikolaevich Koshlyakov was born in Salsk, southern Russia. He studied art in Rostov and trained as a set designer at the city theatre. Koshlyakov's artwork style involves merging cityscapes with symbols of politics, history, and culture using large-scale painting on crude materials such as cardboard. He represented Russia at the 50th Venice Biennale and his works have been exhibited at the Louvre and Pompidou Centre as well as the Guggenheim, New York and Bilbao. Koshlyakov has described his work as involving "utopian mythologies" and giving "history...a revitalised colour as painted old film."
