    Virgilio Ripari was born in Asola (or perhaps Bozzolo) in the Province of Mantua, Lombardy, Italy in 1843. He had a hard life growing up in Asola. Andrea Terzi, the mayor, recognized his great aptitude for painting. It was due to Terzi's patronage and generosity that Ripari was able to attend the Academia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan. There he honed his artistic talents under such great teachers as Giuseppe Bertini and Raffaele Casnedi.

    Ripari soon distinguished himself for his ability and hard work that earned him numerous awards. In 1866 he heard the call of the country and volunteered for the third war of Independence, during which he fought on the front of Trentino in Tyrol. After the war, he returned to his paint...
