In 1927 he moved to Los Angeles and made animation history in 1930 by producing the first Technicolor cartoon: the five minute opening sequence of "The King of Jazz." In 1940 he created what was to become his most famous character, Woody Woodpecker. Lantz was honored with an Academy Award in 1978. He died in Los Angeles on March 22, 1994.
