    Wilhelm Kobell was born son of the landscape painter Ferdinand Kobell in Mannheim in 1766. Initially he was taught art by his father and continued his education at the Drawing Academy in Mannheim. In 1792, at the young age of 26, he followed a call to Munich to become court painter. Between 1808 and 1815 Kobell painted in the service of crown prince Ludwig, he made a total of 12 paintings of the Bavarian combats against Napoleon.

    In 1814 Kobell took over guidance of the landscape class at the Munich Academy. After years of painting battle scenes, Kobell turned to a new image type in the 1820s and 1830s, which is generally described as "plei-air portrait" or "encounter picture". In these pictures he depi...
