About Wilhelm Georgy

  • Biography

The draftsman Wilhelm Georgy was a student of Friedrich Preller d. Ä. in Weimar and made a name for himself as an illustrator from 1853. Georgy initially lived and worked in Leipzig, where, in addition to drawing, he also made woodcuts. In this last position he worked closely with Adolph von Menzel and created woodcuts based on his designs for Kugler's world history. Around 1882 the artist settled in Weimar. Georgy's accurately drawn works, which testify to a profound study of nature, were of no less importance for the late romantic German book illustration.
