Willem Van Leusden was trained at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. He received the royal scholarship for young artists for three years. Early in his career his work reflected expressionism before he turned to surrealist painting. Together with the artists Jopie Moesman and Willem Wagenaar, van Leusden formed the core of a group of surrealists who worked in Utrecht from 1930 to 1950.
