    William Banks Fortescue was born in Birmingham in 1850 and died in the United Kingdom in 1924.

    Wiliam is known for his paintings of rural and fishing life in Cornwall, although this painting depicts a scene in rural France. Fortescue studied art in Paris and traveled extensively in Europe before settling in Cornwall. He was a member of the Newlyn School and spent most of his career living and working in St. Ives.
