    William Irving (1866-1943) was born in the English Ainstable in Cumbria and worked as portrait, landscape and genre painter in Newcastle upon Tyne in North East England. He studied at the Newcastle School of Art under the guidance of William Consens Way. He then worked as an illustrator for the Newcastle Weekly Chronicle and rose to an acclaimed portraitist.

    He exhibited regularly at the Bewick Club and the Royal Academy (1898-1906). He continued his studies in 1905 at the Académie Julian in Paris. One of his best known paintings is ‘The Blaydon Rayce’, which today is on display at the Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead.
