William Green settled in the Lake District just after 1800. He is generally regarded as one of the first artists to make a comprehensive and accurate topographical survey of the area. The result was his major 1819 work, "The Tourists` New Guide to the Lake District", based on the numerous watercolors and drawings he made over the previous two decades. At his death in 1823 his epitaph was written by his friend, the poet, William Wordsworth.
